The Ultimate Guide for US Travelers: Renting a Car in Sarajevo (2026)

Planning a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina? Renting a car in Sarajevo is the best way to see the stunning mountains and historic towns like Mostar. However, driving in the Balkans is a bit different than driving in the US.

At CREAT360° Rent a Car, we want your trip to be stress-free. Here is everything a US citizen needs to know about renting a car in Sarajevo.

1. The Legal Stuff: Do I Need an IDP?

Yes. In 2026, all US license holders must have an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive legally in Bosnia.

  • Pro Tip: You must get your IDP from AAA in the United States before you fly. You cannot get one after you arrive in Sarajevo. Always carry both your US State license and your IDP together.

2. Manual vs. Automatic Transmission

Most cars in Europe have a manual stick shift. For many Americans, this is a challenge.

  • Our Solution: We specifically offer a wide range of Automatic Transmission vehicles, including the Volkswagen Passat, VW Touran, and the luxury Audi RSQ8.
  • Advice: Book your automatic car at least 2 weeks in advance, as they are in high demand during the summer season!

3. Fueling Up: "Gas" vs. "Diesel"

In the US, “gas” is the standard. In Bosnia, it is easy to get confused at the pump.

  • Gasoline (Unleaded): Look for the green handle labeled “BMB 95” or “Euro Premium.”
  • Diesel: Look for the black handle labeled “Euro Diesel.”
  • Warning: Never put “Autogas” (LPG) in your car unless specifically told to do so. It is a different fuel system!

4. Important Local Road Rules

  • Headlights: You must keep your headlights on 24/7, even in the middle of a sunny day.
  • Alcohol Limit: The limit is 0.03%. This is much lower than in the US (0.08%). Our rule? If you drive, don't drink at all.
  • Police Checks: It is normal for police to do routine “Stop and Check” points. Stay calm, show your IDP, and your rental contract.

5. Crossing Borders (Montenegro & Croatia)

Many travelers want to drive from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik or Kotor.

  • The Green Card: You need a specific insurance document called a “Green Card” to cross the border.
  • CREAT360° Advantage: Just let us know your travel plans, and we will prepare all the paperwork for you. No hidden “border fees” at the last minute!
